If you’re looking for a low carb option because you dog is diabetic, then you need to be careful of these.

Beanietoe’s picks for the best low carb dog foods!

We’ve taken the time to compile this list of the best low carb dog foods to help pet parents in their quest for the perfect dog food. All of the items we’ve curated must follow specific guidelines. They need to be almost entirely composed of meat based protein, they must offer superior nutrition to other products, and they must be very low on grains and starches.

Some of these recipes do feature healthy veggies in them, but they will not be loaded with grains or potatoes, and the vegetable content will be kept to a minimum. When choosing a new food for your dog, you should of course keep in mind that they are an individual. There’s no one size fits all approach when it comes to diet, and you may need to take that into consideration when shopping for their food. Some dogs may be more sensitive to certain ingredients than others.

#1 – Wysong Archtype

Wysong has a large inventory of high quality, low carbohydrate dog foods available in both dry, wet and raw diets. The product we’re featuring in our list is the Archtype raw diet. This particular product comes in several varieties which feature high quality proteins like rabbit, quail and pollock. This is a freeze dried meat product which you can either feed dry or you can use water to reconstitute it. The second option will likely be the best method. Not only does this make it more appealing to your dog, but it can also help him to keep hydrated since many animals acquire the bulk of their liquids through eating and not through drinking.

The ingredients for this product are mostly meat based, including a “prey” type of recipe which includes whole meat, organs and even bones. This mixture provides maximum nutrition for your dog. While the product is not entirely grain free, it is very limited. The most important ingredients are all meat based, and this food is so nutrient dense that it can actually be fed to cats as well! This product is over 95% meat, making it an excellent choice for your dog’s low carb diet. You can find out more about this food here.

#2 – Stella and Chewy’s Dinner Patties

Coming in at #2 on our list is Stella and Chewy! This pet food brand specialized in freeze dried dog foods that are 95% meat. Similar to Wysong’s products, you can actually feed these patties either dry or wet depending on what your pup prefers. They offer several flavors including chicken, duck, turkey, beef, lamb and more, each recipe focusing on a single protein item, which is great for sensitive pups.

This food is also grain free, starch free, and several recipes are poultry free as well if your dog is sensitive to any of those items. The ingredient list here is stellar, and all of the initial ingredients are whole meat or organ based, providing a better quality nutritional profile for your dog. This is quickly followed up by healthy fruits and veggies, including pumpkin, which is a great addition for dogs that are prone to having an upset stomach. That makes this food superiorly digestible, and likely a good choice for older dogs or those who may have medical problems. You can learn more about this awesome dog food at their website.

#3 – KetoNatural Pet Foods

starch free dog food

This excellent low carb dog food is comprised of less than 8% carbohydrates. Ketonatural also does not include any corn, wheat, potatoes, soy, barley or other starchy items. It offers an excellent 46% protein and 16% healthy fats. While the base nutritions for this food are quite good, there are some offending items in here which are not ideal, that’s why this one only makes #3 on the list.

While they do use whole chicken and organ meats, the second ingredient is pea protein. There’s nothing wrong with using pea protein, but we’d prefer if another meat item was listed as the second ingredient. Manufacturers are required to list ingredients in order of prominence, and we’d prefer any veggies to be further down the list. The recipe is also not entirely grain free, which is preferred.

However, this food does use a very limited ingredient profile which is great for dogs with allergies. While we would’ve preferred more meat content, this is still a high quality food that would make a fine choice for your dog. You can learn more about ketoNaturals here!

Tips for transitioning your dog to his new diet

While in some cases your pup may take to this new diet right away, in others they may need a little time to fully adjust to a new way of eating. This can be particularly true of older dogs or ones who frequently have trouble with nausea or diarrhea. If this is the case for your dog, then you may want to try to transition them to their new food more slowly.

Start out by sprinkling a small amount of the new food on top of their old food or try mixing it together. If they have eaten is successfully, then continually add a little more until you have phased out the older food. Make sure to give your dog at least 2 weeks to fully adjust to his new food. If there are still issues after this point, then you may want to try a different recipe, as he may be sensitive or allergic to something in that food.
